森部英司
1978年愛知県に生まれ
名古屋芸術大学（彫刻・造形科）を卒業。イギリスの交換留学後、イタリアローマに滞在【作家アシスタント】帰国後、2002年より御殿場の乗馬クラブに勤務。主にインストラクター・調教・企画の仕事に7年間携わる。2002年より馬や馬具をモチーフに作品を作り始め、実際の馬を使ったアートパフォーマンスやインスタレーションベースに絵画やオブジェの制作を開始。現在は、クラブを離れHORSE ART PROJECTをベースに新たな視点から作品を制作している。
愛知を拠点に展覧会を行い平面から立体、空間まで実験的な作品を手がけている。

Artist´s statement
When I started horse riding, I found out for the first time, what the old proverb "Michikusa wo Kuu" (eating the roadside grass:loiter on my way) primarily means. From this ordinary phrase often used, I can guess, how close the relationship between men and horse was in Japan in the past. Horses were then work force for farmers and also status symbols for the samurai (Japanese warriors). Eventually horses gave way to tractors and automobiles. Now we can see horses only in few places. But I think, that horses match the most with elegant streets in our towns.
I studied some time abroad in England, while I was a student at Nagoya Art College.
After returning to Japan, when I planned to move from Nagoya to Tokyo, I got a job at a horse riding club in Gotenba (Shizioka). At this club, horse riding was taught to children as part of outdoor activities.
Here I experienced horse riding for the first time in my life, but the horse flouted me. There were only four signals between a horse and me: go, stop, turn left, turn right. When I tried kicking the horse's side to make him go, he stood still as if he slept. Everyday I was at a loss on horse's back, wondering “Why does he follow my instruction?” Finally I found out, that the cause was my attitude towards the horse. If there was the slightest hesitance in my mind, the horse would notice it and feel a bit of confusion. What was needed to better communication with horses was simplicity of my feeling and attitude.
In 2002, I started to perform and create the installations with the theme of "Horses", based on my own experiences. After that, I studied the history of the evolution and the biology of horses. From 2008, I started to go to see the horses all over Japan, asked about their names and the breeding background of each horse I met, and then paint their faces.
At the end, the horses bred by their breeders have come to be seen by me as an artistic production.
In fact, the modern breeding of horses is artificial, man-made by using cross-fertilization technique. For me, especially a thoroughbred is the best artwork.
If the evolution of horses had been left to nature, it would have taken tens of thousands of years.
In my work "Genealogy", being in the process of production, I try to capture the bloodline and facial expression of the best man-made creatures in view of the history of horse breeding by human beings.
